MTV’s VMA performances are famed for their incredible artists, hit songs and generally bizarre dancing acts to boot.
But there is no doubting the popularity and cultural significance of the show and the iconic moments it provides.
Here are five of some of the best:
5th: Lady Gaga, “Paparazzi”, 2009
Any performance with Lady Gaga is memorable, with the singer famed for her controversial outfit choices just as much as hit hers.
And her performance in 2009 was true to form. “Paparazzi” topped two of the US’s billboard charts (Rhythmic, Dance Club Songs) and was a global hit.
Gaga combined the popular song with a performance that saw her appear angelic only to be covered in fake blood and hanged from the ceiling.
4th: Kendrick Lamar: “DNA/Humble”, 2017
The American rapper has proven to be incredibly successful, even going on to perform at Super Bowl LVI alongside names like Dr Dre, Snoop Dogg and 50 Cent.
One of his memorable performances came in 2017 as he demonstrated his rapping talent with an incredible light show using lazers and flames to accompany, leaving audiences dazzled and starstruck.
3rd: Britney Spears, “I’m a Slave 4 U”, 2001
Spears has had a lot of up and down moments throughout her life, but gave one of the most iconic musical performances in history when she chose to wear a Burmese Python around her neck as decoration.
Many viewers were likely interested in her sex appeal as the then-19-year-old produced a jungle themed show that saw her begin in a cage with a tiger.
But the snake stole the show with the bright colours of its skin and sheer boldness of Spears to perform with the predatory animal.
2nd: Michael Jackson, “Medley”, 1995
Although the King of Pop is no longer with us, his legacy endures through the generations.
The singer was known for his exceptional range and command of his voice, becoming a famous in his childhood alongside his brothers.
As an adult, he was also known for his dancing and performances proving to be just as great an entertainer as a singer.
His VMA show toured some of his biggest hits, with Slash crushing his guitar performances whilst Jackson changed costumes on-stage.
1st: Madonna, “Vogue”, 1990
Coming out ranked #1 is Madonna‘s “Vogue” performance in 1990. The costumes immediately grab your attention with the singer looking like she time-travelled directly from 1700s France.
Her LGBTQ-inspired production showcased the underground dance style as she taught audiences how to ‘vogue’.
The whole performance maintained an incredible level of grace and class that almost made her seem as though she transcended the event entirely.
Her lyrics contained important messages of acceptance in a difficult time for several minority groups that can still be heard some 33 years later.
