The Washington Commanders, for many the dark horse of the 2025 NFL playoffs, beat the Detroit Lions in the Divisional round of the playoffs at Ford Field and advanced to the NFC Championship. for the first time since 1991.

Rookie quarterback sensation Jayden Daniels made a statement with his second playoffs win as he recorded 299 passing yards for two touchdowns and he showed a lot of poise and leadership that few newcomers have shown in the NFL.

Now the Commanders, a team that won four games in 2023 but that bounced back and was able to win 12 regular-season games in the first year with a new coaching staff at the helm, will play the winner of Sunday’s game between the Philadelphia Eagles and the Los Angeles Rams for a ticket to Super Bowl LIX.

Robert Griffin III goes wild celebrating Washington’s victory

Robert Griffin III, former Washington Commanders No. 2 overall pick in the 2012 NFL Draft and Heisman Trophy winner, went all the way to celebrate Daniels and Washington’s win over the Lions as he ran to the streets at night and screamed his lungs out to let everybody know his former team is heading to the NFC Championship.

“Jayden Daniels just led the Washington Commanders to the NFC Championship game. Listen, if you need a play, it’s Jayden Daniels all day. This team has to be the greatest team in the universe on 4th down, they walked into the Detroit Lions house, walk in your trap and take over your trap.” Griffin said in a video he posted on X.

Griffin III, who was once considered the quarterback that could led Washington to a Super Bowl but who was released by the Commanders in 2016 after being depleted by multiple injuries, added that Washington have a great chance to get a championship this year.

“Jayden Daniels has the entire city in his hands now and nobody is afraid because of the poise this young man has. He’s unbelievable. Washington fans, you deserve this, D.C., stand up. We are definitely rolling out there to the NFC Championship, wherever that game is at.” Griffin III stated.

Commanders’ defense came out big

While the main story of the Washington Commanders’ playoff run so far has been Jayden Daniels’ incredible perfomance, the defense came out big against the Lions. They forced Jared Goff to commit four turnovers, including a fumble and an interception returned for a touchdown and grabbed another pass from Jameson Williams on a trick play. Washington scored points off three of those turnovers.

Daniels remained the star for the Commanders as he has been all season. He completed 70% of his passes for 299 yards and two touchdowns with 51 yards on 16 carries. He added a couple more records to his already stacked case to be named the Offensive Rookie of the Year.

With his 350 total yards, he has the most total yardage by a rookie in a single season, including the playoffs, in NFL history. He now has 14 wins, which ties Ben Roethlisberger for the most by a rookie in NFL history.
