Prince Harry and Meghan Markle recently stepped into action amid the devastating LA wildfires, drawing mixed reactions from the public and media. The couple, who typically reside 90 miles north of Los Angeles, made their way to Pasadena last Friday to assist with relief efforts for the Eaton Fire.
Partnering with Mayor Victor Gordo and local emergency teams, they visited evacuees at the Convention Center, offering comfort and distributing provisions. Meghan, wearing an LA cap, was captured in videos embracing evacuees alongside Harry, showcasing their compassionate presence during the crisis.
Mayor Victor Gordo commended their involvement, stating, “This is their second visit today. We were here earlier today and they were serving food, anonymously. No one knew they were serving food, with masks on. They didn’t come out here for publicity. They came out here to work.” He further explained that the couple personally thanked first responders and visited affected families to witness the damage firsthand.
Helping hands or media savvy?
However, not all responses were positive. Online speculation quickly surfaced, with some questioning the authenticity of their visit. A video showing Meghan hugging a woman sparked scrutiny, with one online commenter claiming, “The girl that Meghan was hugging is leaving with them, so she’s clearly staff.”
Another critique noted the presence of a TMZ photographer in a restricted area, accusing the couple of orchestrating a publicity stunt: “Then you pan round to see that the TMZ photographer was allowed to follow them into the security closed off area, to get the footage needed. Publicity vultures.”
Adding to the backlash, actress Justine Bateman labeled the couple “disaster tourists” on social media, writing, “Meghan Markle and Harry are no better than ambulance chasers. What a repulsive ‘photo op’ they achieved. They are ‘touring the damage’? Are they politicians now? They don’t live here; they are tourists. Disaster Tourists.“
Despite the criticism, Harry and Meghan’s contributions included donations of clothing and children’s items to those impacted by the fires. They also issued a heartfelt call to action through their official website, urging people to support evacuees and affected families. “If a friend, loved one, or pet has to evacuate and you are able to offer them a safe haven in your home, please do,” they encouraged. The couple emphasized checking in on vulnerable neighbors and donating essentials like clothing and toys.
