The 2024 Little League World Series is about to begin, featuring some of the country’s top baseball and softball prospects with an expanded 20-team format, while the Little League Softball World Series (LLSWS) also features a 12-team format, both formats remaining in place for the third consecutive year.
A new LLSWS champion was crowned on Sunday as the Pitt County Girls Softball League of Winterville, North Carolina took this year’s title in a tournament that began on August 4 in Greenville, North Carolina and had some games affected by bad weather caused by a tropical storm that brought heavy rains.
The LLSWS, meanwhile, concluded its regional tournaments to begin the international series in Williamsport, Pennsylvania, starting this Wednesday, August 14, and will end with the national and international finals on August 24, while the World Series championship game will be held on August 25.
In addition, this year’s MLB Little League Classic will feature an exhibition showdown between the New York Yankees and Detroit Tigers at historic Bowman Field in Williamsport, Pennsylvania, home of the Williamsport Crosscutters, on August 18, which will be broadcast on ESPN’s Sunday Night Baseball. Play-by-play is scheduled for 7:00 p.m. ET/16:00 p.m. PT.
The inaugural MLB Little League Classic
This will be the seventh annual event featuring Major League teams in an exhibition event, hosted by MLB and the MLBPA.
The first such game was successfully held in 2017, with a game between the Pittsburgh Pirates and the Saint Louis Cardinals, who also mingled with players from the different teams that participated in that year’s Little League series in a full celebration of baseball.
In addition, the players enjoyed some of the sights, sounds and action of the Little League World Series, while in the evening, they played a game with the little players in the stands. On that occasion, each team won a game, but really the goal of this series is to encourage the professional players and the young prospects to get to know each other, forming a very special bond.
In fact, after each match, a handshake line was formed for the little ones in attendance, amidst a curiously family-like atmosphere, with family members of the tournament participants taking part.
