The relationship between Kirk Cousins and the Atlanta Falcons seems to be coming to an end after a season full of ups and downs. Signed in March 2024 to a four-year, $180 million contract, Cousins was seen as the long-term solution to the quarterback position in Atlanta. However, his performance in the 2024 season fell short of expectations, accumulating 3,508 passing yards, 18 touchdowns and 16 interceptions, with a passer rating (QBR) of 50.4, ranking 23rd in the league
As the season progressed, Cousins showed difficulties in protecting the ball, leading the league in interceptions and fumbles. These performances led head coach Raheem Morris to make the decision to give rookie Michael Penix Jr. the starting job in December 2024. Penix, selected eighth overall in the 2024 draft, brought a spark to the Falcons’ offense, recording 737 passing yards, three touchdowns and three interceptions in his first three starts.

With Penix cementing himself as the starting quarterback, the Falcons face a significant financial decision. If they decide to release Cousins before March 12, 2025, the team would incur $65 million in dead money against the salary cap. This situation is comparable to that of the Denver Broncos with Russell Wilson the previous season, where they opted to release the veteran quarterback and take on a considerable financial burden.
As the deadline approaches, the expectation is that the Falcons will release Cousins, allowing him to seek opportunities with another team while Atlanta focuses on developing its promising rookie quarterback.
