Paige Bueckers just made history at the University of Connecticut. A few months away from heading to the WNBA, Bueckers inscribed her name in the Huskies’ history books by breaking a record that, until Sunday, belonged to one of her idols, the legendary Maya Moore.
Bueckers’ career has been one of the most eventful in UConn history due to injuries. The six-foot guard missed 19 games of her sophomore year with a tibial plateau fracture and her entire junior season with an ACL injury.
Despite this, Bueckers broke a record that had stood for 14 years and joined a select group that includes all-time greats Moore, Napheesa Collier, and Katie Lou Samuelson, among others.

Paige’s new record
On January 19, in a game against the Seton Hall Pirates, Bueckers became the fastest Huskies player to reach 2,000 points and only the 12th in history to surpass this milestone.
The star guard broke the mark with a pull-up jumper at 8:05 of the second quarter, sending Gampel Pavilion into a frenzy celebrating Bueckers’ achievement. It took the Huskies star 102 games to reach the mark, surpassing the 108 it took Moore in 2011; Collier did it at 133, and Samuelson at 123.
In her final year of eligibility, Bueckers will likely have one thing left to do: surpass Moore’s career record of 3,036 points after leaving college in 2011. With just 13 games remaining, it’s an impossible feat.
Paige is grateful but incredulous
On Friday before the game, the Huskies star was just a few points away from breaking the mark. But when asked what she thought about it, the guard said, “It’s kind of crazy to hear.” After all, she grew up looking up to Moore and watching her become the star of the Minnesota Lynx.
She said she feels grateful and “extremely blessed,” adding, “It’s kind of surreal to think about all of the people that have passed through here and my journey and how I’ve come to where I am. And I guess that’s a pretty cool feat.”
