Singer Sia Kate Isobelle Furler, better known as Sia, has revealed that she has Autism Spectrum Disorder, more commonly known as Autism.
The performer confessed that she was relieved to reveal the news.
“For 45 years I thought, ‘I have to go put on my human suit’. It’s only in the last two that I’ve completely become myself,” she said in a podcast interview with Rob Cesternino.
Sia, who has had hits such as ‘Taken for Granted’ and won several awards at the ARIA Music Awards, rose to fame in 2011.
She has also collaborated with David Guetta on ‘Titanium’ and rapper Flo Rida on ‘Wild Ones’.
Sia has not disclosed the symptoms she suffers from
The Australian has not wanted to give more details about her disorder or specify what symptoms she suffers from.
She did, however, talk about her experience and her relationship with other people with Autism.
“I was finally able to sit in a room full of strangers. We told each other our deepest, darkest, most shameful secrets. Everyone laughed and we didn’t feel like pieces of trash for the first time in our lives; we felt seen for the first time for who we really are,” she continued.
Sia also did not reveal when she was diagnosed with autism, something that can make it difficult to relate to other people and can even cause social anxiety.
“We were able to start going out into the world and just operating as human beings with hearts and not pretending to be anything,” she concluded.
It is also worth remembering that Sia was heavily criticized in 2021 for casting a girl with non-verbal autism in her film ‘Music’.
The singer was attacked for choosing the young girl as the main character in the music video and for the way the disease was portrayed in it.
At the time, Sia tweeted a defense of her decision: “My heart has always been in the right place.”
