As the NFL’s coaching carousel spins even before Black Monday, an unexpected name has entered the fray: Kevin O’Connell, head coach of the Minnesota Vikings.

Reports from Fox Sports’ Jay Glazer suggest that multiple teams are considering trading for O’Connell, whose contract runs through 2025.
“There’s one candidate out there that’s going to surprise you all, that no one knows is on lists that he is,” Glazer explained on Fox Sports.
“Maybe the Vikings don’t let it happen, but also Kevin O’Connell kinda has the card saying, ‘Hey listen, I’m not gonna re-sign there, so you might as well get something for me.’
“Now I don’t know, because obviously, I don’t think Kevin knows about this right now, but there are multiple teams who have them on that board to see, ‘Let’s at least try and see if we can trade for him.'”
O’Connell has proven himself in Minnesota
Since stepping into the Vikings‘ head coaching role in 2022, O’Connell has demonstrated his ability to lead and adapt. He quickly turned Minnesota into a contender, posting a 34-16 regular-season record. In his first season, O’Connell guided the team to the playoffs, though they fell in the wild-card round to the Giants.
The following season proved more challenging, as starting quarterback Kirk Cousins suffered a season-ending Achilles injury, forcing the Vikings to cycle through multiple quarterbacks. Despite missing the playoffs, O’Connell’s offensive expertise remained evident.
This year, adversity struck again when rookie quarterback J.J. McCarthy tore his meniscus before the season began. O’Connell turned to Sam Darnold, a former Jets quarterback, and revitalized his career.
Under O’Connell‘s guidance, Darnold amassed 4,153 passing yards and 35 touchdowns, leading the Vikings to an impressive 14-2 record heading into Week 18.
Despite his success, O’Connell‘s future with the Vikings has become a topic of speculation. While the Minneapolis Star-Tribune reported that the team plans to begin contract negotiations with O’Connell and general manager Kwesi Adofo-Mensah after the season, no talks have occurred yet. This delay has reportedly prompted some teams to explore trading for the 39-year-old coach.
Trading for head coaches is uncommon in the NFL, but not unheard of, and O’Connell’s record and offensive acumen make him a prime target for teams in need of a transformational leader.
Vikings co-owner Mark Wilf, however, has expressed confidence in O’Connell and Adofo-Mensah, signaling the franchise’s intent to secure its future under their guidance.
For now, O’Connell remains a key figure in Minnesota’s success, but the possibility of a blockbuster trade adds an intriguing twist to the NFL’s ever-evolving coaching landscape. Whether he stays or moves, O’Connell’s decisions will undoubtedly leave a lasting impact on the league.
