As Super Bowl LVIII approaches, weather experts are warning that a dangerous super fog could develop in New Orleans, potentially impacting travel for thousands of fans heading to the Caesars Superdome.
Although the game itself will be played indoors, the thick fog could make roads hazardous, particularly in the early morning hours leading up to Super Bowl Sunday.
Super fog is formed when fog droplets mix with smoke particles, creating an extremely dense mist that can reduce visibility to nearly zero.
Meteorologists are linking this possible event to warm temperatures, high humidity, and smoke from a marsh fire burning roughly 30 miles outside the city in St. Charles Parish.
“Visibility could drop to less than a quarter of a mile at times – or less during super fog – particularly in the hours before sunrise,” FOX Weather reported.
With an estimated 100,000 visitors expected in New Orleans for the Super Bowl, officials are urging drivers to exercise caution, as similar fog conditions have led to major accidents in the past.

History of Super Fog in New Orleans
While super fog is rare, New Orleans typically experiences at least two such events each year.
The phenomenon has caused several large-scale traffic accidents, including:
- An October 2023 super fog event that triggered a 160-car pileup on Interstate 55, resulting in eight fatalities and numerous injuries.
- A December 2024 incident that caused a 40-car crash, leading to 33 hospitalizations.
Officials are particularly concerned about travel disruptions on Interstate 10, which serves as a major route into the city from states along the southern U.S. border.
FOX Weather footage from Friday morning already showed dense, low-lying fog forming in the area, suggesting conditions could deteriorate further as the weekend progresses.
Authorities are also closely monitoring the St. Charles Parish marsh fire, which is contributing to the worsening conditions.
Firefighters are struggling to fully contain the blaze due to its location in difficult terrain.
Adding to the concern, New Orleans is expected to experience unseasonably warm temperatures, with forecasts predicting highs of 80°F on Saturday and 79°F on Sunday, roughly 10 to 15 degrees above normal for early February.
Post-Super Bowl Travel Could Also Be Affected
While the Super Bowl itself will not be impacted by the weather, those traveling home after the game may encounter further disruptions. A major winter storm is expected to move through the Mid-South early next week, bringing:
- Wintry precipitation across the southern Ohio Valley and Mid-Atlantic.
- Thunderstorms stretching from the Gulf Coast into the Tennessee Valley.
This system follows another major winter storm projected to impact 27 states across the Midwest and Northeast over Super Bowl weekend.
For now, the immediate concern remains super fog in Louisiana, which could make travel in and around New Orleans especially dangerous. Fans heading to the Super Bowl are advised to monitor weather updates and plan their journeys accordingly.
