The Dallas Cowboys Cheerleaders have been dazzling audiences since 1961 and this summer, the world-famous cheer squad will take center stage in a new series, “America’s Sweethearts: Dallas Cowboys Cheerleaders,” which delves into the rigorous journey to becoming one of these iconic performers.
Directed by Kelli Finglass, the series offers a behind-the-scenes look at the cheerleaders’ journey from auditions and training camps to performing for over 90,000 fans at Cowboys home games at AT&T Stadium in Arlington, Texas.
Created by Emmy Award-winner Greg Whiteley in collaboration with One Potato Productions and Boardwalk Pictures, “America’s Sweethearts” reveals the dedication and drive of the cheerleaders and their coaches throughout the 2023/24 season.
“The kind of access and creative freedom we need to make the kind of work we want to make is not easy to come by – especially when dealing with a brand as large as the Dallas Cowboys,” Whiteley told Netflix.
“To their infinite credit, the Cowboys offered unfettered access for the year we filmed the DCC and left us alone. The result is an authentic portrait of one of the most storied and beloved institutions we have in American pop culture.”
In addition to highlighting their professional lives, the series provides an intimate glimpse into the personal lives of the cheerleaders, showcasing their experiences from the rehearsal field to their personal triumphs and challenges at home.
“No matter how you are feeling, you have to portray a level of joy and happiness that is now part of the job,” Whiteley added.
“Your job is to show up and entertain fans, and that doesn’t leave much room for your own personal emotions. You’ve got to put on some makeup and this uniform and become Wonder Woman for a couple of hours.”
