This weekend, Irish-American fighter Sean ‘Sugar’ O’Malley will headline UFC 306 from the Sphere in Las Vegas, Nevada, as he defends his UFC Bantamweight Championship against Georgian challenger Merab Dvalishvili.
Born on October 24, 1994, Sean O’Malley currently holds the sixth spot in the UFC men’s pound-for-pound rankings.
He began his professional MMA career under the guidance of head coach John Crouch at The MMA Lab and is now coached by his longtime friend Tim Welch.
O’Malley transitioned to professional MMA after a successful amateur career, which included a 9-2 record in MMA, 4-0 in amateur kickboxing, and 2-0 in amateur boxing. His early professional fights took place in Montana before he moved to North Dakota and competed for Legacy Fighting Alliance, where he gained attention with a spectacular knockout of David Nuzzo.
O’Malley made a significant leap when he competed in Dana White‘s Contender Series 2, where he secured a UFC contract with a stunning first-round knockout of Alfred Khashakyan. He debuted in the UFC with a win over Terrion Ware at The Ultimate Fighter 26 Finale on December 1, 2017, earning a unanimous decision.
Bantamweight title was the beginning of O’Malley‘s rise
His UFC career saw a notable victory against Andre Soukhamthath on March 3, 2018, which earned both fighters Fight of the Night bonuses.
However, O’Malley‘s career faced a setback when he received a six-month suspension from the NSAC for testing positive for ostarine, keeping him out of the octagon throughout 2019. He made his return on March 7, 2020, with a knockout win over Jose Alberto Quiñonez at UFC 248.
On August 19, 2023, O’Malley captured the UFC bantamweight title with a second-round technical knockout of Aljamain Sterling at UFC 292, earning a Performance of the Night bonus.
For his first title defense, he faced Marlon Vera at UFC 299 on March 9, 2024, winning by unanimous decision and securing his sixth Performance of the Night bonus. Now, O’Malley is preparing for his second title defense against Merab Dvalishvili.
