Aboxer who died in March 2024 has been handed a four-year ban from the sport by the United Kingdom Anti-Doping board in an embarrassing mix up for the National Anti-Doping Panel (NADP).
Moises Calleros died at the start of March 2024 in Juarez, Mexico, after suffering a heart attack according to postmortems after his close relatives found him dead at their home only to be handed the ban posthumously.
The 34-year-old had been suspended from June 8, 2023 after testing positive for cocaine and metabolite benzoylecgonine, two banned substances, following a bout with Gelal Yafai in London’s O2 Arena on the undercard of an Anthony Joshua fight.
The ban was due to run until June 7, 2027 with the NADP considering time he spent provisionally suspended as time already served before they became aware of the misfortune Calleros suffered, something they have since addressed.
“UK Anti-Doping (UKAD) has today received information regarding the death of Mexican professional boxer Moises Calleros,” the board said in a statement. “UKAD received this information shortly after publishing details of the outcome from a case concerning Mr Calleros in accordance with the UK Anti-Doping Rules.
“Unfortunately, UKAD had no information regarding Mr Calleros’ sad passing at the time of publication and has now removed all details of this case from its channels.”
Who was Moises Calleros?
Calleros was a seasoned fighter with 49 professional bouts across his career, in which he returned an impressive record of 37 wins, 11 losses and one draw that allowed him to even compete for the WBO Minimumweight title against Ryuya Yamanaka in 2018, although he lost.
He went on to fight Julio Cesar Martinez in 2020, who currently reigns as the flyweight champion, before clashing with Yafai on the undercard of Anthony Joshua and Jermaine Franklin.
He was 34 years old.
