Wimbledon’s First Round has already started and the history of this legendary tournament needs to be remembered properly. The Amateur Era at Wimbledon spans between its inception in 1877 until 1967, that time gave us the Doherty and Renshaw brothers’ era. William Renshaw was the one who won six Wimbledon titles during that time. Lawrence Doherty won 5 and Reginald Doherty won 4. Then we have the Open Era, which spans from 1968 to today. Both eras had great champions but the Open Era certainly changed the sport for the better as both technology and multi culture tennis took over the sport. Women had the great reign of Martina Navratilova during the ‘1980s, she won a total of 9 Wimbledon singles trophies and 7 doubles with different teammates. In both men and women, Navratilova is the one with the most titles. Before her, Billie Jean King was dominating the Amateur Era and she helped the sport transition into the Open Era. In singles, she won a total of 6 trophies. In doubles, she won 6 of them. But the Williams sisters were the ones who revolutionized women’s tennis in general. Serena Williams ties Steffi Graf with 7 singles trophies. Alongside Venus, the pair are the only ones who ever win 6 doubles trophies together. Navratilova won 5 with Pam Shriver but the other two were with different teammates.
Gentlemen’s all time Wimbledon winner’ list
The men’s doubles category doesn’t have a clear dominant couple, it is the singles where the biggest talents resided at all times. The Open Era brought the brilliant Björn Borg era, he won five consecutive Wimbledon singles tropihes between 1976 and 1980. Pete Sampras cominated most of the ‘1990s with 7 trophies between 1993 and the year 2000. Then, Roger Federer arrived in the new millennium to become Wimbledon’s king. With 8 trophies, he’s the man who’s won the most but there is one star who is threatening his reign. Serbian Novak Djokovic is currently at 7 Wimbledon trophies and he has a chance to tie him this year as he begins his road to the final.
