Footballer Maddy Cusack, who was re-signed by Championship side Sheffield United in July, has died suddenly at the age of 27.
“Sheffield United Football Club is devastated to report the sad news of the passing of Maddy Cusack. All our thoughts are with Maddy‘s family and friends at this extremely difficult time,” said the club.
Sheffield United have not provided information on the cause of Maddy Cusack‘s death: “The club and Maddy’s family would appreciate a period of privacy and will not comment further at this sad time”.
Maddy Cusack, the first player to play 100 games for Sheffield United
Maddy Cusack played for Aston Villa, Birmingham City and Leicester City and had been at Sheffield United since 2019, for whom she played more than 100 games – the first in their history to do so – and for whom she also worked in their marking department, having been named one of the team’s captains last month.
“This is heartbreaking news for everyone at Bramall Lane. Maddy had a unique position being part of several teams at Sheffield United and was popular with everyone who knew her. We will miss her,” said Sheffield United chief executive Stephen Bettis.

Leah Williamson, captain of the England women’s national team, paid tribute to Cusack: “I send all my love and condolences to Maddy’s family at this terrible time.”
Sue Campbell, FA (Football Association) Director of Women’s Football, shared that “we are all devastated to hear of the passing of Maddy Cusack. On behalf of the FA, the Lionesses, the Women’s Super League and the Women’s Championship, our thoughts and condolences go out to Maddy‘s family, friends, teammates and everyone at Sheffield United.
