Conor McGregor is working towards a new fight date after his scheduled bout against Michael Chandler fell through. Originally set for June 29, the highly anticipated fight would have marked McGregor‘s return to the octagon after a three-year hiatus.
However, the Irishman’s plans were derailed by an unforeseen injury during his training camp, forcing him out of the fight for the first time in his UFC career.
While no new date has been officially confirmed, McGregor‘s teammate and close friend Peter Queally provided some insight into the potential timeline.
Speaking to talkSPORT, Queally said, “It seems like they will endeavor to make that fight in September. That’s what I’m hearing. That’s what you can look forward to if they can make it happen.”
Queally, who has witnessed McGregor‘s rise in the UFC firsthand, shared the disappointment felt by many fans.
“I’m so disappointed. Obviously, I’m his friend. You don’t want to see someone you’re close with going through something bad,” Queally said. “Just as a fan, I was looking forward to the week in Vegas, the fight, and everything that comes with a Conor fight.”
He continued: “There’s nothing like it on Earth. Anyone who hasn’t been to one, I’d save your pennies, go, and try to experience that.
“It’s pretty crazy. I’ve been lucky to have been at all of them. That’s what I was looking forward to and that’s what I’m most disappointed about. I just wanted to be involved again and experience that another time.”
McGregor has not fought since July 2021, when he suffered a broken leg in his trilogy fight against Dustin Poirier. The injury has kept him out of action, but he has remained in the public eye through various ventures and controversies.
Queally, who has also been sidelined since September 2023, will be commentating instead of fighting at this Saturday’s Bellator Dublin card.
