Jennifer Lopez is set to deliver one of the most demanding and ambitious performances of her career in the upcoming film Kiss of the Spider Woman.
Directed by Bill Condon, the musical drama will see Lopez playing three distinct roles and performing 11 musical numbers, solidifying her reputation as a true triple threat in Hollywood.
Adding even more intrigue to the project, the film is produced by Lopez’s ex-husband, Ben Affleck, along with his longtime collaborator and best friend Matt Damon.
Despite their past, the duo remains committed to bringing this ambitious musical to the big screen, making it one of the most anticipated projects of the year.
Lopez Tackles Multiple Roles
Bill Condon, best known for his work on Dreamgirls and Gods and Monsters, has expressed his admiration for Lopez’s ability to balance music, dance, and dramatic acting in this film. Speaking to Collider, he shared just how complex and demanding Lopez’s role is.
“Jennifer plays three parts in the movie,” Condon explained. “She plays an actress, she plays the lead character in the movie within the movie, and then another character in the movie – she plays Spider Woman, Aurora, and Ingrid. Three separate parts.”
But that wasn’t the only challenge Lopez faced. The film features an intense musical element, with 11 full-scale performances that required her to fully immerse herself in song, dance, and character work.
“It is a musical movie, so she has 11 musical numbers, which is spectacular,” Condon added. “No one else on Earth could have done this, especially because we shot them all in a four-week period before we went to Uruguay to do the prison part of the movie.”
The film, based on the classic stage musical, required Lopez to embody the elegance and theatricality of a 1950s Hollywood actress. Condon praised her ability to channel this old-school performance style while keeping the portrayal genuine.
“It’s an unbelievably delicate thing she pulled off because she’s acting in the style of a 1950s movie, but never, ever, ever mocking it or making fun of it. She’s making it real. I don’t know anybody else who could have done it.”
Diego Luna Joins Lopez in a Love Story of Depth and Emotion
Joining Lopez in Kiss of the Spider Woman is Diego Luna, known for his performances in Rogue One: A Star Wars Story and Y Tu Mamá También. Condon revealed that Luna’s natural charisma and emotional depth made him the perfect choice for the role.
“I wanted him in the movie because, in this telling, it’s a love story,” Condon said. “These qualities that Diego has – intelligence, compassion, humanity, all of that – are the almost ideal version of a student revolutionary.”
Condon, who has worked with many of Hollywood’s biggest stars, didn’t hold back in his praise for Luna’s acting ability.
“Working with him, I’m as huge a fan as you are. I think he’s really among the best, if not the best actor I’ve ever worked with. It just astonishes you. Also, he’s a great collaborator. He’s somebody who has produced movies and directed movies. The experience is something I’ll treasure forever.”
With Lopez and Luna leading the project, the film is shaping up to be a visually stunning, emotionally charged musical experience that brings the classic Broadway production to life in a fresh and compelling way.
