With this, NASA seeks to overcome the energy challenges posed by the Martian environment, as well as accelerate the viability of sustainable human missions on the red planet, gizmodo.com reported.

The conditions on the planet present extreme challenges for power generation, and although solar energy is efficient on Earth, on Mars it faces limitations due to its distance from the Sun, as well as several phenomena, including dust storms that can obscure the sky for weeks.

Nuclear fission, which uses elements such as uranium-235 or plutonium-239, generates enormous amounts of energy by splitting atomic nuclei. This technology, independent of sunlight and weather conditions, is being studied to ensure a constant energy supply on the planet.

NASA explained that the essential systems for survival and operation on Mars will require a reliable power source, and experts estimate that a compact fission reactor capable of generating 10 kilowatts could be sufficient to meet basic needs.

This energy will be crucial to control the temperature in the habitats and maintain adequate living conditions, as well as to purify the air and generate drinking water through advanced processes.

Other benefits would be the production of oxygen using technologies such as MOXIE, which extracts oxygen from Martian carbon dioxide, and it will also be able to power exploratory vehicles and scientific equipment, maximizing their operational efficiency.

The Kilopower project and its importance for the future of Mars

NASA is developing compact nuclear reactors with the project known as Kilopower.

These reactors, designed to provide continuous power for years, will be critical to the success of long-duration missions. They will also enable tasks such as local resource extraction and processing, which are essential to establishing a sustainable presence.

But before implementing them on Mars, these technologies are being tested on the Moon as part of the Artemis program. The testing ground is crucial to ensure that the systems work properly in extreme conditions.

With the use of nuclear energy, NASA is advancing the possibility that the time will come when living on Mars will be a real possibility.

This approach not only addresses energy challenges, but also represents a strategic breakthrough towards the colonization of the red planet. Testing on the Moon and the development of advanced reactors mark a milestone on the road to expanding humanity beyond Earth as never seen before.
