It was almost 20 years ago that the change was made to daylight saving time. Since the passage of the Energy Policy Act of 2005, daylight saving time in the United States begins every year on the second Sunday in March and ends on the first Sunday in November.
The effects of Daylight Saving Time
The human body is accustomed to habits, and the brain adjusts through exposure to light and when night comes, it is time to rest to complete a 24-hour cycle and that is when rest begins.
Sleep patterns are in 90-minute cycles and the most recommended is to have five cycles, but having the schedule with an hour delay to what we have now, it is possible that the light lasts a little longer, so in winter it gets dark later and we can adjust our rest.
At night, levels of a hormone called melatonin begin to rise, causing drowsiness. Too much light in the evening, that extra hour of daylight saving time, delays that rise and the cycle becomes desynchronized.
Should I move my clock forward or backward this Sunday?
This Sunday, November 3, daylight saving time ends at 2:00 a.m. From then on, you will have to turn your clocks and equipment back one hour, in case they do not do so automatically.
In 2025, daylight saving time will begin on Sunday, March 9, and run through Sunday, November 2, when it will end, i.e., always on the third Sunday in March and the first Sunday in November.
However, in some areas of the United States this change is not made, as the Uniform Time Act of 1966 allows certain places not to adopt daylight saving time.
