Mauricio Pochettino has become the standout favorite to become Chelsea‘s next coach. Frank Lampard‘s appointment as interim manager until the end of the season has not stopped the Blues’ pursuit of a new boss.
The search for candidates has been reduced to four. In it are Julian Nagelsmann, although the German has almost definitely dropped out of this race, Vincent Kompany, Luis Enrique and Pochettino, the best positioned to be the new coach of the London team.
Chelsea and Pochettino‘s representatives have held several meetings in recent weeks and the feelings on both sides are positive. So much so that the Argentine coach has become the main favorite to take the reins of the team next season.
The London club is offering Pochettino the chance to have a say in the team’s composition, because the club’s owner, billionaire Todd Boehly, has understood in the short time he has been in the world of soccer that spending large sums of money on signings does not guarantee sporting success, but rather that it should be done with the specific needs of the team in mind.
Chelsea were already in talks with Pochettino last summer, but at that time the sporting conditions offered by the English team did not end up convincing the coach.
Pochettino spent more than five years as coach of Tottenham, a team with which he reached a Champions League final in 2019. He also led the team to the runner-up position in the Premier League in the 2016-17 season.
After leaving Spurs in November 2019, Pochettino joined Paris Saint-Germain for the 2020-21 campaign. However, despite winning 55 of his 84 games in charge, Pochettino did not continue at the French side.
Todd Boehly’s idea is to wait until the summer to make a final decision on his next manager. However, there are several analysts who insist that the decision should be made as soon as possible.
