But what is the origin of this happy joke?
According to league historians, this tradition began in the 1984 season, although it is not clear who did it first in two separate events:
The first theory is that the idea came from player Jim Burt of the New York Giants, who threw the bucket of Gatorade at his coach, none other than the intimidating coach, Bill Parcells. While the second theory points out that the coach who was bathed was another of the great sideline dictators, Mike Ditka, when he was in charge of the great team of the Chicago Bears
