The end of the Mike McCarthy era with the Dallas Cowboys brought forward the work of team owner Jerry Jones to undertake the search for a new head coach and begin planning for the 2025 season.
The names of the candidates are beginning to emerge, with reports that Deion Sanders has already been interviewed, but on Tuesday NFL Network’s Jane Slater provided details of the search and it appears that Jerry Jones does not want any interference in choosing the head coach who will return the Cowboys to prominence.
“It seems that Jerry has been on some kind of solo mission. He’s answering the phone and making calls,” Slater said.

Candidates to be the Cowboys’ head coach
According to a report by AP, Jerry Jones’ favorites to replace Mike McCarthy are two former Dallas Cowboys players: Deion Sanders and Jason Witten.
Deion Sanders finished his second season as head coach of the Colorado Buffaloes in the NCAA, and already interviewed Monday with Jerry Jones about the opening.
For his part, Jason Witten was the best tight end in franchise history and is the club’s leader in games, starts, consecutive starts, receptions and receiving yards. He is currently the head coach at a private school in the Dallas area and his team just won a state championship.
Another candidate is Kellen Moore, offensive coordinator of the Philadelphia Eagles, who has strong ties to Dallas quarterback Dak Prescott, as he was his backup in his last season as a player in 2017.
Detroit Lions defensive coordinator Aaron Glenn could be another viable candidate. The former Texas A&M player spent two seasons with the Cowboys at the end of his 15-year career.
