He spent his high school years at Victory Prep Academy, where in his senior season he averaged 28.5 points, 13.4 rebounds and 8.8 assists per game.
He was selected to play in the prestigious McDonald’s All-American Game and the Jordan Brand Classic, where he had 17 points and 7 rebounds.
He played one season with the University of Kentucky Wildcats, in which he averaged 5.9 points, 7.9 rebounds and 1.0 assists per game, at the end of which he declared himself eligible for the 2018 NBA Draft, but without hiring an agent in case he decided to back out. He finally made it clear in May that he would not return to Kentucky and would move forward with his plans for a professional career.
He was selected forty-first overall in the 2018 NBA Draft by Orlando Magic, but was subsequently traded to the Denver Nuggets. He did not make his debut until January 25, 2019, in a game against Phoenix Suns, grabbing one point and three rebounds.
After one season in Denver, on February 4, 2020 he was traded to Minnesota Timberwolves, in a multiple transfer between four teams and involving 12 players.
On September 10, 2021, he agrees to a contract extension with the Wolves for 3 years and $13.8 million.
On July 1, 2022, he is traded, along with Malik Beasley, Patrick Beverley and Walker Kessler to the Utah Jazz in exchange for Rudy Gobert.
