California faced a double blow on Friday as a 3.7 magnitude earthquake struck the San Francisco Bay Area, coinciding with raging wildfires in the southern part of the state.
The quake, which occurred at 7:02 a.m. PT, had its epicenter located about five miles southwest of the Golden Gate Bridge and two miles west of the Great Highway.
The US Geological Survey (USGS) reported that more than 5,000 residents felt the tremor, with additional reports still coming in. A smaller aftershock, measuring 2.2 magnitude, followed just four minutes later. The seismic activity occurred along the infamous San Andreas Fault, which stretches across California from Cape Mendocino to the Salton Sea.
Wildfires and Quakes Challenge Emergency Response
The earthquake comes at a time when California is already grappling with deadly wildfires in the Los Angeles area.
These fires have claimed at least 10 lives and forced 180,000 residents to evacuate their homes. The dual emergencies have placed significant pressure on state and local emergency response teams.
San Francisco Mayor Daniel Lurie addressed the city’s response to the quake, saying, “I ordered city government into action immediately this morning, and our first responders have been out across the city ensuring the safety of our residents. We have also been sharing information and giving people the tools to protect themselves and their families in an event like this.”
So far, no significant injuries or damage have been reported from the earthquake. However, the tremors disrupted public transportation, with the San Francisco Muni subway halting operations temporarily, just as commuters began their morning routines.
Residents Share Their Experiences
Bay Area residents described the earthquake as brief but significant. Nadia Rahman, who lives in San Francisco, shared her experience on social media, stating, “[I] just felt the most significant earthquake I’ve personally experienced in San Francisco.”
Others noted that while the shaking was intense, it lasted only about a second.
This recent earthquake is one of several in the region this week. The USGS recorded a 3.0 magnitude tremor less than 100 miles away on Thursday, as well as two smaller quakes earlier in the week.
California’s Vulnerability to Major Quakes
Seismologists have long warned that California is overdue for a massive earthquake, often referred to as “The Big One.”
Occurring along the San Andreas Fault, such an event could reach a magnitude of 8.0 or higher, potentially causing approximately 1,800 deaths, 50,000 injuries, and $200 billion in damages, according to the California Earthquake Authority.
As Californians face the immediate challenges of wildfires and earthquakes, officials continue to emphasize the importance of preparation and resilience. With the state’s history of seismic activity and its susceptibility to wildfires, emergency readiness remains a critical focus.
