Jamie Foxx recently opened up about his harrowing recovery journey following a medical emergency that left him reeling.
While filming Back in Action with Cameron Diaz in April 2023, the actor suffered a brain bleed, resulting in a stroke that drastically altered his life. Reflecting on the incident during his appearance on The Graham Norton Show on Jan. 17, Foxx revealed how he used humor as a coping mechanism during his recovery.
“I was very unwell, but now I am back feeling good,” the 57-year-old shared. “It makes you realize that you need people that care and love you around to get you through it.”
The actor described the shocking moment he realized 20 days of his life had vanished due to memory loss caused by the stroke. “I thought I was being pranked when they told me,” he admitted. “It felt beyond crazy.” Determined to reclaim his strength, Foxx leaned on his natural wit and humor, which sometimes bewildered those around him. “I knew I had to get back and realized the way to do it was by being funny. I told so many jokes people thought I was mad, and then I would act as someone else – for three whole days I was Denzel Washington.”
The Role of Humor in Recovery
Foxx‘s humorous antics drew inspiration from his past. In a 2017 interview series, OFF SCRIPT, he famously impersonated Washington, playfully mimicking his line delivery and facial expressions.
His ability to channel humor during a dark period reflects his resilience and determination to heal.
Following the stroke, Foxx was flown to a Chicago rehabilitation center, where he underwent weeks of therapy to relearn basic functions like walking.
By August 2023, Foxx shared an encouraging update on Instagram, announcing he was starting to feel like himself again.
In January 2024, Foxx resumed filming Back in Action with Diaz. He admitted to Norton that he wasn’t shy about letting stunt doubles handle action scenes. “I was happy for someone to pretend to be me when doing my stunts to make me look good,” Foxx quipped.
A Triumphant Return to the Screen
Diaz, who took a decade-long hiatus from acting, credited Foxx with luring her back into the spotlight.
“I had 10 years of not paying attention to anything – not accepting any advances – and then I got this script and thought that maybe it was time,” the 52-year-old actress said.
She added that working with Foxx was a joyful experience, particularly when performing her own stunts.
