Gonzalez‘s boxing journey began at the age of eight when her father introduced her to the sport. “My dad forced me to box at 8 years old,” she recalled. Gonzalez revealed that a significant setback was the breakdown of her relationship with her brother in 2016. “In 2016, my oldest brother and my relationship just went downhill, like we don’t speak, and I think that really affected me mentally too, where I just didn’t want to box ’cause we all boxed together growing up,” she shared.
From 2018 to 2022, Gonzalez took a hiatus from boxing. During this period, she faced numerous challenges, including physical and mental health issues. She experienced a significant weight gain and depression, which impacted her training. “I only trained for two weeks instead of two months for an important tournament like nationals, so I gained 35 pounds and was depressed,” Gonzalez admitted.
She wants to thrive in Paris Olympics
The COVID-19 pandemic further extended her break from the sport. However, Gonzalez made a triumphant return in 2023 by defeating Camila Pineiro 5-0 at the Pan American Games in Santiago, Chile, securing her spot in the Olympics. Reflecting on her journey, she said, “Converting my Youth Olympic Games gold medal into an Olympic gold medal would be a dream come true, and it’s the only thing that’s on my mind. I won’t stop until I get it.”
