Iron Mike will step back into the ring on Friday, November 15 to take on Jake Paul at AT&T Stadium in Arlington, Texas, in an eight-round bout, but it is a week in which stories are remembered in a 20-year career, from his debut in 1985 until his retirement in 2005, in Essentially Sports they addressed the anecdote of the brawl prior to the fight against Lennox Lewis in 2002.
Iron Mike’s bodyguard from those years, Chuck Zito, had a chat with DJ Vlad in which he revealed details about the pre-fight on January 22, 2002, before the day came to get into the ring against Lennox Lewis on June 8.
Mike Tyson was rescued by his bodyguard
Zito recalled that during the incident he was in the hotel when the brawl began at the Hudson Theatre in New York: “He got face to face and then the bodyguard came up to Mike and Mike went to hit him and, you know, Lennox hit him and it was a big fight, but I was in the back when this happened.”
Zito then recalled how he jumped to Tyson’s rescue: “I ran out when I got there there was a big pile, so I’m going to go through,” in a scene in which he noted that “all they saw was me pulling people out to look for Mike.”
After the fight, the Nevada State Athletic Commission fined Mike Tyson $335,000 for biting Lennox Lewis and denied him a fight in Las Vegas, so the fight was held in Memphis, Tennessee, with Lewis winning.
