In a tragic turn of events, singer CoCo Lee has passed away at the age of 48 after a devastating suicide attempt, as confirmed by her sisters in a heartfelt Facebook post on Wednesday. According to her elder sisters, CoCo Lee attempted suicide at her home on Sunday, July 2, and was immediately rushed to the hospital. Unfortunately, despite efforts to save her, she remained in a coma until her untimely demise on Wednesday.
The Facebook post revealed that CoCo had been battling depression for several years, and her condition had worsened significantly in recent months. The post stated: “Although CoCo sought professional help and fought against depression, sadly, the darkness inside her overwhelmed her.”
She became famous thanks to Disney’s Mulan
Originally born in Hong Kong, CoCo Lee moved to the United States at the age of 9 and later returned to her homeland to embark on a successful music career. She rose to prominence in 1998 when she sang the Mandarin version of the theme song “Reflection” from Disney’s beloved film “Mulan” and provided the Chinese voice for the film’s titular character.
CoCo Lee also achieved remarkable milestones, becoming the first Chinese American to perform at the Oscars with her rendition of “A Love Before Time” from Ang Lee‘s masterpiece “Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon.” Additionally, she became the first Chanel brand ambassador of Chinese descent for the Asia region.
Throughout her career, CoCo remained a prominent figure in mainland China, known for her talent and distinctive style that made her an iconic pop star of the early 2000s. She actively participated as a judge on various singing competitions and reality shows, leaving an indelible mark on the industry.
CoCo Lee is survived by her mother, her husband Bruce Rockowitz, a Canadian businessman and former CEO of Hong Kong’s Li & Fung supply chain company, as well as two stepdaughters.
