Adolis “El Bombi” Garcia led the Texas Rangers to its first MLB World Series berth since 2011 on Monday with two home runs in Game 7 of the ALCS at Minute Maid Park against the Houston Astros. The origin of his nickname has been a topic of discussion, especially because it doesn’t mean what most people think.
Garcia, 30, previously revealed the true reason behind his nickname. Many fans believe the slugger got the monicker because he hits bombs out the park, but it’s actually due to a physical trait.
“Ah, so the nickname comes from my friend, my neighborhood friend,” said Adolis. “He called me that because my head is shaped like a light bulb.”
Garcia won the ALCS MVP award thanks to racking up five homers through seven games against the Astros.
Who is Adolis Garcia?
Adolis was born and raised in Ciego de Avila, Cuba and grew up playing baseball in his home country.
Playing in the MLB was not in Garcia’s plans as a young man, but defected from Cuba in 2016 to join the St. Louis Cardinals in 2017.
Garcia moved up the ranks in minor leagues before joining the Rangers in December 2019. He now has a shot at becoming an MLB champion after his incredible ALCS performance.
