The Kansas City Chiefs are heading to the Super Bowl; stop us if you’ve heard that once, twice or five times in the past six years. Led by Patrick Mahomes and Travis Kelce, the Chiefs continue their quest for an unprecedented three-peat, with only the Philadelphia Eagles standing in their way.
In order to make it to The Big Game, the Chiefs had to dispatch one of their greatest rivals, Josh Allen’s Buffalo Bills. In a thrilling AFC Championship game, the Chiefs came out on top by three points. With Taylor Swift in the stands, a jaw-dropping portion of the United States was watching. So much so that it broke a viewership record.
Chiefs vs. Bills AFC Championship breaks viewership record
According to Austin Karp of Sports Business Journal, the Bills-Chiefs game was the most-watched AFC Championship game ever, drawing 57.4 million viewers. It continues a big trend, as the Chiefs have surpassed 53 million viewers in each of the past three conference championship games.
- 2025: Bills v. Chiefs, 57.4 million viewers
- 2024: Chiefs vs. Ravens, 55.5 million viewers
- 2023: Chiefs vs. Bengals, 53.1 million viewers
- 2022: Bengals vs. Chiefs, 47.8 million viewers
- 2021: Chiefs vs. Bills, 41.8 million viewers
The Swift Effect could very well be in play, as the numbers continue to increase. But they were also up dramatically from 2022 to 2023 and beyond, perhaps signaling that casual fans are “hate watching” the Chiefs.

The Chiefs don’t care, as all they care about is winning. But this won’t help the optics for the NFL, as many believe they are favored by the league due to Swift, Mahomes and the overwhelming amount of viewers they generate.
