The Department of Veterans Affairs (VA) is making big changes to its online login process, aiming to simplify access while boosting security. By 2025, Veterans, beneficiaries, and caregivers will need to use Login.gov or ID.me to sign in to services like VA.gov, the VA: Health and Benefits mobile app, and other platforms.
This transition means older sign-in methods, such as My HealtheVet usernames and passwords, will no longer work after January 31, 2025, and DS Logon credentials will be phased out by September 30, 2025.
The VA emphasizes that these changes stem from feedback. “Veterans have told us many times over several years that they want fewer account options,” the VA explains. By consolidating login methods, the department aims to streamline the user experience, making it easier to access benefits and services with a single, secure sign-in.
Security is at the heart of this transition. With identity theft and fraud on the rise, protecting Veterans’ sensitive information has never been more critical. In 2023, the Federal Trade Commission (FTC) reported over one million identity theft cases, with Veterans and military retirees losing an estimated $350 million to fraud. To combat this, both Login.gov and ID.merequire identity verification and multifactor authentication (MFA)-key tools to safeguard personal data and prevent medical fraud.
Protect your benefits: VA’s new login rules start in 2025
Setting up an account is simple and takes about 10 minutes. Veterans can visit www.va.gov/sign-in-changes to create their Login.gov or ID.me accounts. Those who already use one of these platforms are all set, while others relying on My HealtheVet or DS Logon are encouraged to transition now. Starting early gives you time to familiarize yourself with the new system before the deadlines.
For anyone needing assistance, VA facilities are ready to help. Simply bring a government-issued photo ID and any required documents, and staff will guide you through the process. To make things even easier, the VA offers step-by-step guides, video tutorials, and downloadable fact sheets to ensure a smooth transition.
While these changes affect account-based services, many VA resources remain accessible without signing in, such as downloading forms, finding VA locations, or exploring benefits information. However, having a verified account guarantees uninterrupted access to manage your health care and benefits online.
By acting now, Veterans can ensure they’re ready for 2025 and beyond. As the VA notes, “We’re moving to a simpler, more modern sign-in experience” to make life easier for those who have served.
