Yogurt expiration has been a topic that generates controversy. Specialists in the matter point out that yogurts do not have an expiration date, but rather a best-before date so that the nutrients they provide do not begin to be lost.
Despite this, many people are reluctant to eat yoghurts that have passed their expiry date for health reasons, although, according to various specialists, nothing should happen because the yoghurt has passed the best-before date. Miodrag Borges, an expert in dietetics, commented on this situation in the podcast ‘Tiene Sentido’.
Miodrag Borges: “Yogurt does not expire, by law”
The million-dollar question, what do you do when you have an expired yogurt?, is answered by Miodrag Borges and, moreover, he does so with a very clear position: “Yogurt does not expire, in fact, by law, there is a best-before date, but not an expiration date,” he says.
“If a yogurt is bad, for whatever reason, because there has been a manufacturing problem, it was not taken to the correct temperature, maybe the question of mold: I opened the lid and there was mold… That problem has nothing to do with the date,” says Miodrag Borges, nutrition expert on the podcast ‘Tiene Sentido’.
The reasons why a yogurt might be bad are different, according to Borges, and all of them are unrelated to issues related to the date of consumption: “This problem comes from the origin, it comes from the manufacture, the packaging, and while it is in date I can open the lid and mold appears”.
“Whether it is moldy or the lid is swollen, it may indicate that there has been an undesirable bacterial situation, as a precaution I throw it away,” says the nutritionist to conclude with a reflection in which he seeks logic: “If we open the yogurt, smell it, it tastes good, what fear should we have?“
