NASA is keeping a close eye on a fast-moving asteroid dubbed 2025 BS4, which is set to streak past Earth at a staggering 35,000 miles per hour-10 times faster than a speeding bullet-on Tuesday.
While the space rock is not expected to hit our planet, its sheer speed and destructive potential have sparked concerns. At approximately 23 feet wide and weighing as much as a blue whale, 2025 BS4 could cause devastation if it were to collide with a major city.
Scientists estimate that the impact would unleash a force equivalent to 19,000 tons of TNT, capable of leveling entire urban areas. Though the asteroid will pass at a distance of about 511,000 miles-twice as far as the moon-it still qualifies as a Near-Earth Object (NEO), meaning it falls within 30 million miles of Earth’s orbit.
NASA is monitoring 37,000 NEOs
NASA currently tracks over 37,000 such objects, ensuring none pose an immediate threat. “Asteroids can come at any moment toward Earth,” warned renowned asteroid hunter Franck Marchis. “Having eyes on the sky everywhere in the world allows us to track them.”
NASA’s Center for Near Earth Object Studies (CENOS) continuously monitors asteroids like 2025 BS4 using advanced impact prediction models. In the event of a genuine threat, the agency’s Planetary Defense Coordination Office has strategies in place to protect Earth.
There are no potential risks… for now
While 2025 BS4 is not categorized as a Potentially Hazardous Asteroid (PHA)-a classification reserved for objects at least 460 feet wide-experts remain vigilant.
For now, NASA reassures the public that no known asteroid poses a serious risk to Earth for at least the next century. But with space rocks constantly shifting in orbit, the watchful eyes of astronomers remain firmly fixed on the cosmos.
