The play in which Ravens tight end Mark Andrewsdropped Lamar Jackson’s pass inches from the end zone that would have given Baltimore the tie in Sunday’s game against the Buffalo Bills, made several Cowboys fans relive old and terrifying memories.
After Andrews fumbled the ball on a conversion attempt that would have tied the game in the fourth quarter of the AFC Divisional Game, Dallas Cowboys fans relived that infamous play when their tight end, Jackie Smith, dropped a pass in a similar situation… in a Super Bowl.
Dallas fans open a wound more than 40 years old
All those old Cowboys fans immediately took to social media to open up the wounds of more than 40 years ago.
In Super Bowl XIII against the Pittsburgh Steelers, Smith dropped a pass from quarterback Roger Staubach on third down, which would have tied the game at 21-21.

Dallas had to go for the field goal, and in the end the difference was those four points between the kick and a touchdown, as the game ended 35-31.
At the time of the play, the announcer of the game that was broadcasting the game nationwide said: “Jackie Smith must feel like the saddest man in America”.
That was also the last game in Smith’s brilliant career, who was later inducted into the Pro Football Hall of Fame in the class of 1994.
“As a diehard Dallas Cowboys fan growing up, I had a cruel flashback to Jackie Smith,” NFL writer Ian O’Connor wrote on X.
“I miss Jackie Smith,” lamented another Cowboys fan.
“Ugh. Andrews just went full Jackie Smith. Never go full Jackie Smith,” wrote a third fan.
“I know I’m old. I know it’s not the Super Bowl. And I know it wasn’t the same kind of game. But the first thing I thought of was Jackie Smith,” wrote one more.
‘The Saddest Man in America’
Like Smith in his time, Andrews is among the best tight ends in the NFL today. He is a three-time Pro Bowl selection and earned First Team All-Pro honors in the 2021 season.
Ravens coach John Harbaugh was quick to defend his player by saying, “We wouldn’t be here if it wasn’t for Mark.”
But the success Andrews has often enjoyed in the regular season has often failed to accompany him into the playoffs. In seven career playoff games, he has 24 receptions for 254 yards and has yet to score a touchdown.
After today’s performance against the Bills, he must be the saddest man in the history of the team.
