Fans of the Disney classic, The Little Mermaid, are ‘horrified’ by the appearance of the light-hearted crustacean, Sebastian the crab in the latest trailer for the live action movie.
The movie’s star protagonists, Halle Bailey and Melissa McCarthy, presented the movie’s official trailer at the Academy Awards during its 95th edition.
The release of the official movie poster kicked off much of the uproar shared by fans on social media.
Sebastian the crab’s ‘scary’ appearance has been the target of memes and general disbelief amongst viewers across social media platforms.
‘Look how they butchered my son,’ reads a GIF recreating the scene from ‘The Godfather’.
Another Twitter user captioned an image with, “What I see in my sleep paralysis.”
‘The Little Mermaid’ synopsis
‘The Little Mermaid’ tells the story of Ariel, a beautiful young mermaid with a thirst for adventure. The youngest of King Triton’s daughters and the most defiant, she seeks to find out more about the world beyond the sea and, while visiting the surface, falls in love with handsome Prince Eric. While mermaids are forbidden to interact with humans, Ariel must follow her heart. She decides to make a deal with the evil sea witch, Ursula, who gives her the opportunity to experience life on land, ultimately putting her life and her father’s crown in danger.
The cast of the movie is packed with Hollywood stars. Javier Bardem (King Triton), Daveed Diggs (Sebastian) and Jonah Hauer-King (Prince Eric) feature amongst others.
The movie will be released solely in theaters, not on Disney+, on May 26.
