Phil Donahue, the pioneering television host who revolutionized daytime talk shows, passed away on Sunday night at the age of 88.
His death was confirmed by his family, who revealed that his cause of death was due to a prolonged illness.

Donahue, a Cleveland native, became a household name in the late 1960s when he launched “The Phil Donahue Show,” a groundbreaking program that introduced a new format to American television.
His show, which eventually became known simply as “Donahue,” was the first to incorporate live studio audience participation, allowing viewers to engage directly with contemporary and often controversial topics.
Throughout his career, Donahue tackled issues that were ahead of their time, including discussions on abortion, homosexuality, and feminism.
His fearless approach and willingness to address taboo subjects made him a trailblazer in the industry.
At the peak of its popularity, “Donahue” was a ratings juggernaut, drawing millions of viewers across the nation.
Donahue, an entertainment icon
Over his nearly three-decade career, Donahue hosted more than 6,000 episodes of his show, which aired from its inception in 1967 until its conclusion in 1996.
His influence on the talk show format paved the way for future hosts, including Oprah Winfrey, who has often credited Donahue with opening the doors for her own success.
“If there had been no Phil Donahue show, there would be no ‘Oprah Winfrey’ show. He was the first to acknowledge that women are interested in more than mascara tips and cake recipes – that we’re intelligent, we’re concerned about the world around us, and we want the best possible lives for ourselves.” Winfrey said in 2002.
When he retired in 1996 after earning 11 Daytime Emmys, Winfrey presented him with a Lifetime Achievement honor.
Last May, he was among those presented with the Presidential Medal of Freedom by President Joe Biden at the White House.
In addition to his professional achievements, Donahue was a devoted family man.
He is survived by his wife of 44 years, actress Marlo Thomas, whom he met when she was a guest on his show.
At the time, Donahue was a single father raising his four sons.
The couple married in 1980 and remained together until his passing.
His family, including his children, grandchildren, and his beloved golden retriever, Charlie, were by his side in his final moments.
