game golden boot Salah’s stunning form takes him past Haaland in Golden Boot race

Egyptian's double in Liverpool's 3-3 draw with Newcastle puts him top of goalscoring chart

Mohamed Salah may have been denied a fifth consecutive Premier League victory with leaders Liverpool on Wednesday but he still had reason to celebrate after edging ahead in the Golden Boot race.

The Egyptian had trailed his great rival, Manchester City’s goal machine Erling Haaland, since Matchweek 2 but he finally overtook him by scoring a second-half double in the dramatic 3-3 draw with Newcastle United.

Mohamed Salah 13
Erling Haaland 12
Cole Palmer 9

Haaland scored 10 goals in his first five Premier League matches this season and was seven goals ahead of Salah at that point.

But Haaland has only managed to add two more goals to that total and has drawn a blank in his last three top-flight outings, allowing Salah to catch him up and now overtake him.

Salah closing in on Vardy’s record goalscoring run

Salah has now scored in each of his last seven Premier League matches, becoming only the third player in the competition’s history to go on a scoring run of at least that length on TWO occasions.

The others are Leicester City striker Jamie Vardy and his new manager, Ruud van Nistelrooy, who achieved the feat with Manchester United.

Vardy boasts the longest ever goalscoring run in the Premier League, spanning 11 matches. He set that standard between August and November 2015, when he surpassed Van Nistelrooy’s previous-best sequence of 10.

Salah will need to score in his next four league matches if he is to equal the record. If he stays fit and is selected, those four would be against Everton, Fulham, Tottenham Hotspur and finally, appropriately, Vardy’s Leicester.

Salah breaks Rooney’s record

Salah has also made history in his own right by becoming the first player to both score and assist in 37 Premier League matches, moving one clear of the previous record-holder Wayne Rooney.

Prior to scoring Liverpool’s second and third goals at St James’ Park, he set up their first equaliser scored by Curtis Jones.

What Slot said about Salah

Speaking in his press conference after the 3-3 draw, Liverpool head coach Arne Slot discussed Salah’s imperious form and uncertain future, with his contract expiring at the end of this season.

“It is difficult for me to predict the long-term future, the only thing I can expect or predict is he is a very good place at the moment,” said Slot.

“He plays in a very good team that provides him with good opportunities and then he is able to do special things.

“What makes him even more special for me is before we scored for 1-1 you thought, ‘He is not playing his best game today.’ But then, in half an hour, to come up with an assist, two goals, having a shot against the bar and being a constant threat, that is something not many players can do if they’ve played the first hour like he did.

“That is also what makes him special, apart from if you just look at the goals – his finishing is so clinical. He’s a special player, but that’s what we all know.”
