The post featured an image of his hand holding a sobriety coin, a symbol used in recovery programs to commemorate significant milestones. The coin displayed an image of a tree and the words “Unity Service Recovery,” though the rapper added no caption to the photo.
The artist has openly discussed his struggles with addiction to substances like Vicodin, Ambien, and Valium. His path to recovery became urgent following a near-fatal methadone overdose in 2007.
In a 2009 interview with Vibe, Eminem revealed the extent of his addiction, admitting to consuming large quantities of pills daily and losing control over his substance intake.
Eminem’s drug-fueled past
Reflecting on his past experiences, Eminem recounted last year how he used to travel to Tijuana with friends to smuggle pills back into the United States, describing a particularly alarming incident at customs.
“The last time we went, they took down the guy in front of us at customs,” he said. “They threw him to the ground and started pulling pills out of his pockets and stuff.
“We were scared shitless, but we made it through with our pants full of pills. I don’t know how many we had.
“This should have been one of the first signs for me, but I never thought I had a problem. I really liked the drugs. As I started making some money, I could afford more,” he continued.
Eminem also described the ease with which drugs were offered to him once he became famous: “You go on tour, and people give you drugs for free. I managed for a while. And then, it just became ‘I like this shit too much and I don’t know how to stop.'”
