Not only is London widely known as one of the business and tourist capitals of the world, it is a city brimming with football. A metropolis in love with the beautiful game. Currently seven of the 20 teams that make up the Premier League reside from the UK’s capital city. On a good day, within three hours of driving you could visit all seven different stadiums of the London clubs currently in the English top-flight. Just four miles separate Arsenal and Tottenham. There’s just 1.7 miles between Chelsea and Fulham. From this naturally comes great rivalry between the London clubs. Arsenal have taken on both Chelsea and Tottenham in the last week, and there’s another huge London derby this Thursday, as Spurs go to Stamford Bridge.

Often the argument arises as to who is the biggest London club, and where each team ranks on that particular list. London clubs have won the Premier League eight times in 32 seasons, with Chelsea claiming five trophies and Arsenal three. However, it’s very hard to define that metric of who is a bigger club, with many myriad factors usually coming into play, such as global fan base and trophies won. To try and add some context from the recent era, here at Transfermarkt, we have calculated a table of the total points every London club has won since the Premier League began in 1992.

The London clubs with the most league points in the Premier League era

In total, 10 London teams have taken Premier League points since the 1992/93 season, and it’s very close between the top two, but Arsenal just pip Chelsea to top spot. The Gunners have taken a total of 2,305 Premier League points across the last 32 campaigns. Chelsea had actually moved marginally ahead of Arenal a couple of seasons ago, but two consecutive campaigns of the Blues languishing in mid table with Mikel Arteta’s team challenging for the title, have seen Chelsea fall behind their rivals again. Chelsea take second spot with a still impressive 2,230 points in total. In the overall rankings of all clubs, Arsenal come in 2nd and Chelsea take 4th.

In third place, not too far behind, come Spurs with a combined total of 1,907 Premier League points. The top three sides are the only London clubs to spend every Premier League season in the top flight. They are followed by West Ham in fourth with 1,347 points – the last team to eclipse 1,000 total points. The Hammers have now been in the Premier League for 11 consecutive seasons. Then come Fulham in fifth spot with 735 points. The Whites were getting the label of a ‘yo-yo club’ due to persistent relegations and promotions from and to the English top flight, but now look a solid Premier league team under Marco Silva.

In sixth spot is Crystal Palace with 649 Premier League points. Seventh goes to Wimbledon FC who accumulated 374 points before the club went bust in the 2000’s and reformatted as MK Dons, and breakaway club AFC Wimbledon in 2003. They are followed by Charlton in eighth with 361 points – the Addicks haven’t been in the Premier League since the 2006/07 season. Ninth place is QPR with 308 points and completing the list of London Clubs is Brentford with 140 points – all accumulated over the last three seasons.
