Every October 31st in the United States and other parts of the world, people wait for children dressed up to knock on their doors, with their arms outstretched and an open bag to receive different sweets.
This tradition, known as “trick or treating,” has become a must on Halloween.
And although the origin of this celebration is older, National Geographic indicates that trick or treating became widespread in the United States after World War II, when rationing ended and candy became available again.
The rapid development of suburban neighborhoods, where it was easier than ever for children to move from house to house, also boosted the rise of the tradition.
National Geographic indicates that, in the 1950s, Halloween images and merchandising began to reflect that popularity, and the holiday became more consumerist. Costumes have gone from simple to mass-produced from beloved TV and movie characters.
What time does trick-or-treating start on Halloween?
Regarding the most suitable hours for trick-or-treating, the website Syracuse.com indicates that, as a general rule, from 5 to 8 p.m. are usually the most popular times for trick-or-treating.
And although there are no strict start and end times, trick-or-treating usually begins at dusk, between 5:30 and 6 p.m.
Generally, parents with younger children tend to leave earlier, while there is still daylight.
Houses typically hand out candy until they’re done with the holiday treats they bought. Syracuse notes that older children sometimes stay out until 9 p.m.
The outlet notes that because this Halloween falls on a school night, trick-or-treating may end earlier.
