Sport and television has always been a successful mix. What makes a sport telecast special? It has to be the theme music. Today, I present to you the top 10 sport telecast intro songs.
(10) Are you ready for some football/NBC Sunday Night Football Intros
Rock and American sport go well together. Both intros just represent the American idea of NFL Football. ESPN’s “Are you ready for some football” was at the cornerstone of football broadcasting as it was one of the first rocking themes (Part of ABC’s Monday Night Football). While not the best, they both get you pumped for the game.

(9) Nine’s NRL “That’s my team”
Ok it’s not an original but it speaks to the fan. That Hoodoo Gurus remake was a simple ode to the fan who screams “THATS MY TEAM!” (for better or for worse). Again, there are better but none seem to speak to the fan as much as this incarnation of a sports theme.
(8) World in Union
A simple song explaining the ethos of the game of heaven, I say no more.
(7) Sky Sports F1 Theme
A newie but a goodie. The song “Just Drive” is a pleasant intro compared to other motorsport intros as it reflects simplicity and nostalgia. Combine this with the nice walk through F1 history and it reminds you why you love F1 (if you are a supporter).
(6) BBC Match of the Day
40 years and still going strong. The chirpy and vibrant intro has been a fixture of British television for a long time. Just makes watching football fun.
(5) Simply the Best
Ok maybe it was an ad, but it still told viewers why you should watch rugby league. The Tina Turner anthem gave even the most ardent anti-NRL fans Goosebumps. It gets you singing really easily and makes you love league.
(4) Holy Grail
An emotional reminder of what sporting teams crave each season. Its use by Channel Ten in its AFL coverage gets the hairs standing up off your skin. It is adaptable as it can be transformed and used by any other sport to describe their goals for a season.
(3) Up There Cazaly
The ode to people who love Aussie rules. A simple song that describes what makes the game of Australian Rules fantastic. The chorus of “Up there Cazaly/in there and fight/out there and atem/show em your might” is the ethos of footy and will be for future generations.
(2) The Chain BBC F1 Intro
Partly because of my fondness for Fleetwood Mac but also because it fits within its chosen sport the best. The bass line equals the nervy build up to any race while the guitar solo like the start of the race, is a crazy explosion of passion. 30 years on, Chain has yet to outdate its chose sport and gets the blood pumping before every race.
(1) Channel Nine Cricket Theme
Cricketers have come and gone, matches have been won and lost yet the Channel Nine cricket theme still speaks true. It wins not just for its longevity but for the fact it has gone through many variations yet still it sounds so damn good! Couple that with Bill Lawry’s “Bowled ‘im” and highlights of yesteryear, it encapsulates the joy of sport.
