Tech mogul and proud University of Virginia alumnus Alexis Ohanian couldn’t contain his excitement after the Virginia Cavaliers women’s basketball team pulled off a stunning victory over their state rivals, the Virginia Tech Hokies.
In an electric Atlantic Coast Conference matchup on January 16, 2025, the Cavaliers snapped a five-year losing streak in Blacksburg with a thrilling 73-65 win at Cassell Coliseum.
Ohanian, known for his unwavering support of UVA sports, took to X (formerly Twitter) to share his joy, writing: “It’s always a good day when we beat the Hokies. Great job, ladies!”

The Cavaliers’ performance was nothing short of spectacular. After heading into halftime tied, UVA dominated the third quarter with a crushing 27-12 run that secured their first road win against the Hokies since 2020. The victory not only broke a years-long drought but also improved their ACC record to 3-3.
Ohioan prefers NCAA over WNBA
This triumph comes on the heels of Ohanian’s game-changing $1 million donation to the UVA women’s basketball program in December 2024. The historic contribution-marking the largest gift ever to the team-underscores his commitment to advancing women’s basketball at the collegiate level.
During a recent episode of the Best of Both Worlds podcast, Ohanian shared his vision for women’s sports, revealing that he prioritized supporting NCAA women’s basketball over investing in a WNBA team.
Ohanian wants to promote women’s college sports
Frustrated by what he called the NCAA’s “under-investment” in women’s sports, he even hinted at exploring the possibility of buying the rights to women’s college basketball to ensure it gets the attention it deserves.
Ohanian later elaborated on Instagram: “Women’s college basketball is up next, I’ll tell you that right now. My first big investment into the space is with a multi-year commitment to @uvawomenshoops.”
With this victory and Ohanian’s unwavering backing, the Cavaliers are poised to shine on and off the court, cementing their legacy in women’s basketball.
