Club America right-back Miguel Layun took to Twitter to share a heartbreaking incident that occurred on his 35th birthday.
While celebrating with his family, he received the devastating news that another relative had been tragically found dead, presumably as a victim of a homicide. Layun did not disclose the location where this crime took place.
“Well, this time it was the family’s turn! A couple of hours ago we were notified that a relative appeared dead and with traces of violence,” Layun wrote.
“I don’t think it’s just the country, I have the feeling that the world is going through screwed up moments. Each one of us has a lot to do as humans! I feel very sorry for all those who have gone through moments like this.”
In the midst of this personal tragedy, Layun extended his solidarity to all those going through difficult times, particularly in a country such as Mexico.
He highlighted the alarming number of intentional homicides, surpassing records from previous administrations, that have occurred since December 2019 under the current government of Andres Manuel Lopez Obrador.
Despite the timing of this distressing news coinciding with Layun‘s birthday, his club had previously sent him birthday wishes on Twitter.
The football community rallied around Layun, offering their condolences and support. Prominent figures in Mexican football, including Vanessa Huppenkothen, Rodolfo Landeros, and Gabriel Montiel expressed their heartfelt sympathy to Layun and his family.
Layun’s career
Miguel Layun has had an impressive career, participating in two World Cups (Brazil 2014 and Russia 2018). He spent several years playing for clubs in Europe, such as Watford, Porto, Sevilla and Villarreal, and also had a brief stint with Atalanta early in his career.
In Mexico, he has featured for Veracruz, Club America, and Rayados. Currently, Layun is a veteran player in his second spell with Club America.
