If you went back in time to the league phase draw and told someone that the PSG vs. Man City match in mid-January would be billed as a Champions League elimination match, you’d have gotten some very strange looks.
And yet here we sit with just two games remaining to decide their knockout stage fates, and both clubs sit on the precipice of a humiliating exit
Reigning Premier League champions Manchester City, considered by many at the onset of the season to be Europe’s most formidable side, sat in 22nd position at the start of Matchweek 7, just a point above elimination.

The situation appears even more bleak for French giants PSG, who occupied 25th place, the first elimination spot.
Both clubs have been exceedingly poor this year compared to expectations. PSG have at least held serve in league play, dominating the Ligue 1 table, but have disappointed greatly in Europe. For City, the slump in form has been all-encompassing, leaving both their domestic and European prospects in tatters.

It’s far from inaccurate to label this match as a potential Champions League elimination game, for one or both clubs — a draw serves no purpose for either side, allowing others to pass them by ahead of the final league phase game. Thus, both teams will be desperate to emerge from Parc des Princes with the maximum.
That should make for a gripping game from a neutral perspective, but one that will make things difficult to predict from a number of perspectives.
While neither side has given reason to be trusted, there’s also very little value for either club in a draw, especially the hosts. Thus, there will be an added push to snatch points late if the game is level, leaving little value on splitting the difference, even as both sides seem evenly matched.
With that in mind, PSG have been better statistically in their defeats and seemingly have fewer actual deficiencies as opposed to simple variance, and are the better moneyline play here.

Both of these teams have soft midfields and mistake-prone defensive units. While it’s possible that the return of Ruben Dias helps keep a lid on this match, it also boasts peak silliness potential. Man City’s best route to a positive result in Paris is probably a low-scoring encounter, as they won’t want to get into a shootout with PSG’s loaded front line.
Yet expecting Man City to defend for a full 90 minutes against any opponent at this stage has been a recipe for disaster. Pummeling lowly Ipswich Town in Premier League play this weekend doesn’t feel like a turning point just yet, given the match prior resulted in a late collapse at Brentford.
In a third-straight road match with a critical Premier League showdown against Chelsea coming up on the weekend that also must be factored in, there’s reason to believe City will find themselves under siege throughout this match, and the totals line is surprisingly under-inflated for two attack-minded teams.

Ousmane Dembele has, for a few years now, been an absolute titan when it comes to attacking volume. While he doesn’t get the headlines at PSG, the entire attack largely runs through the 27-year-old. In the past 365 days, Dembele is in the 98th percentile for European wingers in shot-creating actions, with 6.03 per 90 minutes, and his non-penalty xG+xA of 0.85 per 90 minutes is also 98th percentile.
Aiding Dembele’s already large attacking volume is that his shot-getting has skyrocketed this season, averaging 4.61 shots per 90 minute in domestic play, by far the highest of his career. This, incredibly, has not come with a drop in creativity, as he also averages 3.7 shot assists per 90 minutes, also the most of his career.
He is in utterly blistering form, having scored five goals in his past three Ligue 1 games, and he assisted a goal against Atletico Madrid in his last full 90-minute Champions League appearance. If there’s a weakness to Josko Gvardiol’s game, it’s one-on-one defending against dribblers, and this is a nightmare matchup in that regard.
