The 6A/5A Continental League is the toughest conference in Colorado high school girls basketball this season. And with two weeks left in the regular season, there are at least four teams with a chance at the title.
Highlands Ranch (16-2), ranked third in Colorado, has won seven games in a row by at least 15 points each – including a 6-0 start to league play. But its schedule is about to get a lot harder, starting on Friday against Regis Jesuit.
Regis Jesuit (13-6) is also in the league race at 5-1, with its one conference loss coming in heartbreaking fashion against Legend (14-4, 5-0) on Jan. 29. That came in overtime on Regis Jesuit’s home floor despite a career-high 24 points on 9-16 shooting from Iliana Greene. But the Raiders bounced back to blow out Chaparral and Castle View, and can stay in a solid position if they pull a slight upset on the road on Friday.
If Highlands Ranch wins, it sets up league title matches against Rock Canyon and Legend on Feb. 14 and 17, respectively. And if Highlands Ranch loses, its title odds take a big dip but don’t disappear. Conversely, a Raiders win would mean Regis Jesuit would have a chance at a league title with a win over Rock Canyon if Highlands Ranch, Rock Canyon, or another team were to knock off Legend. Rock Canyon (9-6) isn’t as highly-ranked due to its non-league record, but it’s been outstanding in league play at 5-0 and can’t be overlooked.
Greene leads Regis Jesuit with 12 points, 3.4 assists, and 1.2 steals per game, and fellow senior Jane Rumpf, a 6-foot-2 guard/forward, averages 10.4 points, 7.1 rebounds, 2.5 assists, and 1.2 blocks.
Highlands Ranch also has a balanced offensive attack, with Ezra Simonich (15.8 points, 3.2 assists), Jayda Rogers (12.7 points), Addie Moon (11.5 points, 3.1 assists), and Kimora Banks-Thomas (11 points, 3.3 assists) all averaging double-figures and Tori Baker leading the team with 4.9 APG to go with 9.0 PPG.
