Since Usain Bolt retired in 2017, Jamaican sprinting has not found a figure who can come close to the records of the 100 and 200-meter world record holder. But while Bolt‘s shadow remains long, he also inspires the new generations, ones who saw the national hero win eight Olympic golds.
Now there is another newcomer who, at just 16 years of age, has managed to break Bolt‘s U-17 record. This is Nickecoy Bramwell, who, in the 400 meters of the Carifta Games, stopped the clock at 47:27 seconds. He thus lowered the record for the U-17 bracket of that championship by seven hundredths of a second.
The efforts from Bramwell, who was born in 2008, have Jamaica dreaming of another key figure in sprinting. He has 10.94 in the 100 meters and 21.45 in the 200 meters, both results from earlier this year.
In the 400 meters, he also has a best time of 46.75. “I’m looking forward to better things,” said the young Jamaican after beating Bolt‘s record. “I knew I had broken the record.”
Bramwell, who has overcome some injuries, is confident that he will be able to perform without any problems for the rest of the season. His big target, the U-20 World Cup, which takes place in Lima, Peru, in August.
He added: “I’m in good condition, I’m recovering from the injury and I hope to do great things for the rest of the season.”
