Cleveland Browns edge rusher Myles Garrett kicked off the final week before Super Bowl LIX with the news that he has requested that the Browns explore a trade for him. It seems that he wants to win and that is not going to happen in Cleveland.

Every team in the league would love to have Garrett, but who will be the team that makes a deal for him? The Browns have stated that they won’t trade their star pass-rusher, but Eric Edholm of NFL.com took a shot at teams that could pull off a deal. Edholm came up with nine teams, and the Los Angeles Chargers are on the list. 

“The Chargers actually ranked eighth in sack percentage this past season, but there are some concerns. Joey Bosa had an injury-plagued season and could be a cut candidate this offseason. Khalil Mack still played at a high level but is headed for free agency and will turn 34 this month.

Trading for Garrett would allow the Bolts to move on from both players if desired, giving coordinator Jesse Minter another weapon up front and making the defense younger in that area, too. Even if we assume Mack isn’t back in this scenario, an edge combo of Garrett and Tuli Tuipulotu would work pretty well in the rough-and-tumble AFC West”, wrote Edholm.

Could the Chargers swing a deal to acquire Myles Garrett?

It sounds fun, but it wouldn’t be easy. 

The Chargers have decisions to make with both Joey Bosa and Khalil Mack this offseason. Trading for Garrett, which would likely cost a pretty penny, would spell the end of Bosa in L.A. for certain and perhaps Mack as well. 

However, the Browns, already dealing with what might be the worst contract in NFL history with Deshaun Watson, would be eating $36 million in dead money if they traded Garrett. You might be able to come up with a longer list as to why this deal won’t happen than it will.

Jim Harbaugh would no doubt love to add a player like Garrett to what was already a great defense, giving Jesse Minter another great piece to work with. But the price might be a little too high and the Browns might be more willing to play hardball with Garrett than to give into his wishes.
