Johnny Depp has returned to the spotlight after the Oscar Awards 2024 ceremony, but not for the reasons he would have hoped for. The ‘Pirates of the Caribbean’ star was not nominated for an Academy Award and has never won one before.
Robert Downey Jr. was in the same boat until Sunday, when he finally landed the Best Supporting Actor prize at the Oscars for best supporting actor.
Naturally, as his friend, Depp wanted to congratulate him after the gala and posted a picture of the two in their younger days. The only problem is that the ‘Alice in Wonderland’ actor photoshopped himself into an image with Downey Jr., and the bad quality on the photo made it look obvious.
Gradually, fans of both artists have realized that this snapshot never took place together and that Depp had actually retouched it to make it look like that.
Few would have predicted that in the same week, both Depp and the Princess of Wales would have been made to apologize for their poor photo editing skills.
Who was in the image before it was changed?
Depp used an image that the ‘Iron Man’ star had taken 25 years ago with Sarah Jessica Parker, only for the 60-year-old to remove the figure of ‘Sex and the City’ and replace her with his body.
But as soon as the American’s edit was discovered, he decided to delete the photo from his personal Instagram account and upload a photo with Robert Downey Jr. from the 2011 Golden Globes instead.
“Let’s try this again…. Congratulations to my dear friend,” Depp wrote, accompanying the montage with a touch of humor after being ‘caught’ red-handed by his eagle-eyed followers.
The two actors have only shared screen once before with the 2000 film ‘Before Night Falls’, directed by Julian Schnabel, in which a young Javier Bardem was the lead.
Despite not working on many projects together, it hasn’t prevented Depp and Downey Jr. from forging a strong friendship. Next time, maybe they will take a photo together so he doesn’t have to resort to photoshopping.
