The Green Bay Packers have officially started the Jordan Love era. He just finished his second season as a starter, but what lies ahead for his predecessor?
Aaron Rodgers missed almost the entirety of his first season with the New York Jets due to injury. His second year was full of inconsistency and struggle. With a new head coach and general manager for the Jets, Rodgers could be released. Packers insider Peter Daugherty predicted that Rodgers would play for the Las Vegas Raiders next year.
“Quarterback for the Las Vegas Raiders,” Dougherty said when asked what Rodgers would be doing when the season started. “Of course that’s just a wild guess. But I don’t think they hired 73-year-old Pete Carroll (74 in September) to head up a several-year rebuild. They have a ton of cap room (approx. $95M) to improve their talent base and could draft a QB in the first round but not have to play him as a rookie if they had Rodgers.”
Rodgers is perhaps the greatest Packers player ever. He is second in passing yards in franchise history, leads the franchise in passing touchdowns, and has won four MVP Awards with the Packers. He led the Packers to their fourth Super Bowl victory in Super Bowl XLV and also won MVP of the game.
Rodgers is on the backend of his career and retirement could be coming soon. He will be a first-ballot Hall of Famer and will surely have his number retired with the Packers. However, a stop with the Raiders before he hangs up the cleats could be great. He could serve as a bridge to the Raiders’ next quarterback while also giving them a chance to compete next season. He closed out the year on a strong note and could have a chip on his shoulder if he is released.
