NWSL legend Alex Morgan joined Boardroom for their latest edition of “Boardroom Talks” to discuss a wide range of topics, including her investment in Unrivaled, the newly-launched 3-on-3 basketball league co-founded by Napheesa Collier and Breanna Stewart.

“It was really exciting, super compelling, showed off players’ personalities more,” she told the Boardroom reporter Vinciane Ngomsi, adding, “I felt like from day one I was in…I just from my experience as an athlete, what a difference this league was going to make in terms of providing equity to players, having player feedback, really capitalizing on the fan experience and watching that being able to, really dig into who these players are.”

Morgan then chatted about the process of bringing other noteworthy names on board as additional investors for the league. “Having the opportunity to invest, we were able to have an allotment to go out to some of our limited partners in our funds, some of our friends who also are in the investing world, people like Steve Nash, Stu Holden, Michelle Lee, Megan Rapinoe, and you know, a lot of others who came in through our vehicle of investing in Unrivaled,” she noted.

On what era of Alex she’s in right now

“This is my boss era. This is my working girl era, do it all era. I want to be able to have a family, while still fulfilling everything I want to do in the business world.”

On deciding to hang up her cleats for good in 2024

“I kind of had this epiphany that it was just going to be my last year, regardless of what happened to my body. I was thankful that it held up on me. Held up for me this far.”

On co-founding TOGETHXR

“It was really meant for a platform for fans and women, and female athletes alike, to come together and feel like they had a community, a supportive community…To be able to co-found it with three other Olympic medalists, and best athletes in their own sports, nothing feels better than that.”

On why women and girls who play sports become better leaders

“Sports in general just build up your resilience, your like drive for something, your competitiveness. There’s a reason that so many successful business women come from a background of sport at some level.”

On Naomi Girma as a player to watch

“She is such a leader. I believe she’s like 23 or 24, still very young, so that’s someone that is going to have a long career on the national team, and I believe already wore the captain’s arm band one time in the Olympics. Just to see someone that young just be so professional and so mature with handling all of that pressure is really impressive.”

On why coaching isn’t in her future

“ I will not be coaching at all…I and I totally respect coaches and what they do. I feel like I had so much stress as a player and an athlete that going into coaching would probably be that and some. And I think I’m really happy with my stress level right now, yeah.”

On her favorite Taylor Swift era

“I really love 1989…We actually walked out to this song with Taylor in 2015. I want to say it was Style, yeah? So I feel like that song just brings really good memories.”
