Amy Carter, the youngest daughter of the late Jimmy Carter, was back in the spotlight as her father was laid to rest at the National Cathedral in Washington D.C. on Thursday.
Carter’s family members were joined by plenty of illustrious names, including Donald Trump, Barack Obama and George W. Bush, as they laid the 39th president of the United States to rest at a national funeral.
The event marked a return to the spotlight for Amy, who has largely lived her life away from all the noise that comes with being the daughter of a former president.
Who is Amy Carter?
Carter was born in Plains, Georgia in 1967 and and is the only daughter of the former president. She moved into the White House when she was just nine, making her one of the youngest children to ever live there since the children of John F. Kennedy moved in when they were younger than five.
While Amy has largely kept a low profile in her adult life, she was anything but private during her college days. She attended Brown University and while there she actively protested the CIA and apartheid, wand was later dismissed from the school in 1987 for failing to complete her work as per The New York Times.
Her protest of apartheid resulted in her being put on probation a year earlier, and she was also “arrested for demonstrations at the South African Embassy in Washington, the International Business Machines Corporation office in Providence, and at the University of Massachusetts at Amherst.”
She was also acquitted on charges of trespassing and disorderly conduct on the University of Massachusetts Amherst campus over a protest of the CIA.
After leaving Brown she lived in Providence and worked in Boston, before announcing in December 1987 that she was heading to a more Southern school. She then earned a Bachelor of Fine Arts from Memphis College of Art, followed by her master’s in art history from Tulane University in 1996.
Amy Carter and politics
While her father Jimmy Carter was a Democrat, Amy has kept her personal and political affiliations private.
As a member of the lord of counsellors for The Carter Center, she does advocate for human rights and diplomacy.
Now 57, she married John Joseph Kelly in 2007. She has two children, son Hugo James Wentzel and daughter Errol Carter Kelly.
